At the Reason Rally in Washington DC, Carolyn Porco, a noted planetary scientist and humanist, took the stage in front of thousands. Porco is known for her work on solar system exploration, and she currently leads the Cassini mission, which is orbiting Saturn. I watched as thousands gathered to hear this brilliant and talented scientist bring her address. Carolyn said,
“I am a scientist, I have spent my life exploring the planets and the moons and rings in the outer solar system, I’ve taken pictures from the Earth from billions of miles away, and I was drawn to this life because it was clear to me at a very young age that authority figures, despite their power and their prominence, have no monopoly on the truth. They don’t know what’s true anymore than we do. What ends up being true, I found out, was not the subjective opinion of a priest or the Pope or a parent, it is nature herself, it is the physical world that is a final arbiter of the truth and the languages of mathematics and science, once we learn them, allow us to decode the physical world to reveal what is absolutely true.”
If you were to speak with Carolyn Porco, could you defend the truth of the Bible and the existence of a Creator? Many Christians cannot, which has resulted in millions of young adults leaving their faith. Carolyn’s statements, as well as many others that are very similar, continue to motivate Cristie Jo and I as we film with Christian and secular leaders to track the shocking rise of the non-religious.
