Jerry Johnston Interviews David Silverman on the Dramatic Rise of the Religiously Unaffiliated

“22% of people who call themselves Christians believe God is a metaphor for… love.” I asked the outspoken atheist and President of American Atheists, David Silverman, if the numbers were defensible. He told me,

“Not only is it defensible – I will tell you that there is a defensible way to say that the number of atheists in this country is actually quite huge – much larger than people would expect, because people – there’s a big difference between people who call themselves atheists, and atheists.  Most atheists do not call themselves atheists.  In fact, the vast majority of atheists do not call themselves atheists, and this is the major problem.  But if you take a combination of all the definitions that are atheists, but they’re just using a different word – if we’re talking about atheists, plus agnostics, plus secular, plus secular Nones, plus all the people – for instance, the Barna Research Group did a survey back in 2012 that said approximately 22% of people who call themselves Christians believe God is a metaphor for the universe, or for all people, or for love.  They’re atheists.”

Because of our passion for Christians to be thinkers, Cristie Jo and I are traveling across the globe interviewing the top Christian thinkers and most prolific atheists, agnostics, and secular humanists. Our upcoming  documentary will be followed by multiple digital products and resources that will target all ages.
