A few days after our interview with A.C. Grayling in London, our team had the pleasure of conversing with Alistair McGrath. McGrath is the author of multiple theological and apologetic works. He is also the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford and President of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. I asked Professor McGrath’s opinion of Grayling’s statement that the Christian narrative is just reinvented Dr. Seuss Stories.Professor McGrath told Cristie and I,

“I think that it’s very difficult to read the New Testament without being overwhelmed by a sense of novelty.  That something new has happened which in effect you know bursts the old wine skins.  It doesn’t fit at all.  And certainly people like A.C. Grayling would say oh this is just the same old stuff recycled.  You can’t read the New Testament and think that.  I think there isn’t any reason to sustain his judgment.   It’s the old enlightenment narrative which itself is stale and discredited; that Christianity is simply the republication of the older religions.  Nobody who knows anything about Christianity could sustain that judgment. There’s something new here.  Sure, Jesus wasn’t a sort of intellectual.  Who cares?  That’s not what he’s about. He’s about someone who is utterly transformative in opening up not simply a new way of thinking, but a new way of existing.  And I think A.C. Grayling’s remarks just suggest to me that we have an awful lot of communication to do to get this point across, but once it’s grasped it’s transformative.”
