Jerry Johnston Researches Reason Rally 2016: Bobby Scott Address

At the Reason Rally in June 2016 (the “Woodstock” of atheists), my film crew and I listened to Congressman Bobby Scott, a U.S. representative for Virginia, discuss religious freedoms and share his thoughts on how Christians abuse laws that protect such freedoms.

“Just a few years after the passage of RFRA we started to see the law being used not as a shield but as a sword, to undermine fair housing, employment discrimination and public accommodation laws. For example, in 2013, the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision declared that RFRA can allow a for-profit corporation to use its corporate religious beliefs, whatever that means, to deny federal employees, the female employees, birth control coverage under their healthcare plans. So let me say emphatically, we should be free to believe or not, but we should not allow sincerely held religious beliefs of one person to cause harm to another person by allowing discrimination.”

Christians must learn how to respond to such claims in defense of our beliefs and the Bible without getting caught up in emotions. We are losing the battle for our culture in every way– from pop culture to political debates. The resources Cristie Jo and I are producing will equip Christians in defending and understanding their faith.
